What are the conditions for reselling your car?
Before selling your car, make sure you meet all the necessary conditions:
You must be the owner of the vehicle to be transferred. Only the person whose name appears on the registration card is authorized to take such a step. Please note, there may be several co-holders, all of whose names are also entered on the gray card; in this case, the signature of all these persons is necessary.
The address on your vehicle registration document must be up to date. If you have moved and the address is no longer the correct one, it is imperative that you make the change before the sale.
If your car is over 4 years old, the technical inspection is compulsory. It must have been completed within the past six months, or within two months if there has been a follow-up.
Although the majority of vehicles are affected, some are exempt from technical control.
The Histovec site, to help you sell your car
The government has set up the Histovec site, which allows you to find various information about the car you are selling. You enter some information about your car and Histovec then generates a report, which you can consult and share with your potential buyers. In this way, future buyers have a clear vision and are confident about the purchase of the used vehicle.
The information found in this report is:
The technical characteristics of the car such as make, color, but also engine speed, pollution criteria and many more.
The date of its first entry into circulation
History of owner changes
The administrative situation
The list of claims that required the intervention of an expert
Steps to follow before the sale
The administrative process to follow to sell your car is no longer done at the prefecture or by mail; everything is now done online on the website of the National Agency for Secured Titles (ANTS) or by calling on a vehicle registration professional (authorized and approved).
It is still possible to go to the prefectures and certain sub-prefectures where digital points are available to you to carry out this process.
You will therefore need to connect to the ANTS site, either through your account if you already have one, or via FranceConnect where several connection options are available to you.
Once you are logged in, you will need to enter several information about yourself, the vehicle to be transferred and the buyer.
You will then have to download and then print two documents.
The first is the transfer certificate (Cerfa 15776 * 01), which you will need in two copies since there will be one for you and one for the purchaser.
The second document to print is the certificate of administrative situation (also called certificate of non-pledge). At the time of sale, this certificate must be less than fifteen days old, so do not download it too early.
The site will also send you a transfer code that you will need to write down in order to provide it to the future owner.
You now know the different stages that come into play before the sale, but what should be done on the day of the sale?
The transfer of a car between private individuals, on the day of the sale.
The day you transfer your car
When you transfer your car, you will also need to give several documents to the buyer. Here is the list:
The certificate of assignment to be completed with the acquirer, he keeps one copy and you keep the other.
The certificate of administrative situation, dated less than fifteen days.
The gray card: before giving it to the future owner, you must cross it out and write "Sold on day / month / year / hour" or "Give up day / month / year / hour", then sign.
Proof of passing a technical control, which, we remind you, must be less than 6 months old.
The transfer code: this is not really a document, but you must still send this code, which was retrieved from the ANTS website, to the new owner when the vehicle is sold.
The following documents are optional, but we also recommend that you provide them to the buyer when you transfer your car.
A sales contract: we strongly recommend that you make one in order to secure the sale and the transaction. Remember to do it in two copies so that each party has a copy.
The maintenance booklet for the vehicle you are selling can also be an interesting document to provide to the buyer to reassure him and to sell your car at the best price.
