What is dengue?

Also called tropical flu, dengue is an infectious viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito of the genus Aedes, which carries one of the 4 dengue viruses. This mosquito also transmits chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika.

Symptoms of dengue

In most cases, the disease is mild. More severe, even fatal, forms occur in about 1% of cases.

After 3 to 14 days (on average 4 to 7 days) of incubation, “classic” dengue fever manifests itself by one or more of the following symptoms:

fever
headache
nausea
vomiting
retro-orbital, joint and muscle pain
lymphadenopathy
measles-like rash.
In some patients, mainly children, the disease may progress after 3 to 7 days. It is severe dengue or hemorrhagic dengue fever which manifests itself as follows:

multiple haemorrhages (gum, nose, mouth, etc.)
severe abdominal pain
persistent vomiting
tired
commotion
bruising.
As the disease is potentially fatal, early clinical diagnosis and medical management are necessary.
