What are the hidden costs when planning a trip?

hidden travel costs That's it, you've decided on the destination of your next trip. It will now be necessary to establish a budget to see precisely what all this will cost. Once the major items of expenditure such as the price of the plane ticket, accommodation and meals have been estimated, it is necessary to consider the hidden costs that such a trip can generate, and which will sometimes seriously affect the budget.

Visa

Depending on the country chosen, a visa application may be required. If this is the case, the consulate or embassy of the country of destination will be able to provide you with all the information necessary to obtain it.

This request can generally be made on site at the embassy, by mail or online (find out more depending on the destination). In any case, it is recommended to do it well in advance. Indeed, in addition to the time required to obtain it, you will have to take into account the time you will need to collect the documents that will be requested of you.

You may then have to choose between a single visa and a multi-entry visa. The latter has the advantage of letting you cross the borders of the country as many times as you wish. This can be very interesting if you plan to visit other border countries or not, before returning to your departure destination. Please note that the multiple-entry visa can cost much more than the single visa.

The price of a tourist visa can vary a lot from one country to another, but is rarely negligible. The visa for Cuba for example is 50 €, while that of Vietnam will cost you 80 €, and that of Cameroon at 115 €.

You can get more information about obtaining a visa in our article on visas.

Vaccines

The embassy of your destination country will let you know if vaccinations are required or simply recommended for your next stay.

Therefore, it is advisable to approach your general practitioner who can give you his opinion on the risks incurred during the trip. Indeed, these will be different if you plan to live in the city, or go into nature with your backpack, if you live in an international hotel or if you have chosen the tent.

It is also recommended to plan all this quite early, because some vaccines require a first booster to be fully effective.

You will also have to take into account the fact that several vaccines, including yellow fever, can only be administered in certain approved vaccination centres, such as the Air France International Vaccination Center for example.

The price of vaccines also varies. A DTP (diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis) vaccine costs €20, while a vaccine against yellow fever is sold for €57. Nevertheless, the vaccines prescribed by your doctor are generally covered by social security at the rate of 65% (caution, yellow fever and cholera not reimbursed). Your mutual insurance can, depending on the contracts, complement social security.

 Travel insurance

To leave with a free spirit, it is strongly recommended to take out travel insurance. Moreover, some countries such as China request it to obtain a visa.

Of course there is travel insurance included in your bank card, but in this case you must check that the main guarantees are in place. These essential guarantees are as follows:

– Coverage of medical expenses and hospitalizations, with or without deductible, and with a substantial ceiling, allowing coverage of a long hospital stay.

– Repatriation if necessary.

– Civil liability (frequently absent from the contract offered by your classic bank card).

It should be taken into account that even in countries where medicine seems cheaper than in France, a hospital bill can quickly become very expensive. Here are two examples of refunds we have supported:

Canada – Ski accident on Mont Tremblant €5,500

Australia – Motorcycle accident in Perth with multiple fractures €130,000

See other examples of the cost of medicine around the world.

As you can see, taking out travel insurance that includes medical care and repatriation assistance seems like a very justified expense, whatever your destination. Our Globe Partner contract meets all these requirements, and even if it may seem like an additional cost to you, think that this investment will allow you to prepare your trip with complete peace of mind.

Material and equipment

If you go hiking or trekking, you may need to buy some technical clothing (wrinkle-resistant thermal clothing for example), and worry about camping equipment. This can be bought or rented on site, knowing that in case of purchase, it will quickly pay for itself during your next trips.

This beautiful journey could also be the opportunity to offer you the sports camera or the digital camera that have been watching you for months in the store window. Again, if you are looking to justify yourself, tell yourself that this expense, which may not be excessive, (digital camera and sports camera from 80 € to very very expensive) can also be amortized afterwards . Anyway, beautiful memories are priceless!

In addition, for this new equipment as for the old, think of acquiring if it is not already done, a spare battery (10 €) and also an additional memory card (10 to 50 € according to the capacity). This will prevent you from missing the sunset against the backdrop of palm trees that you have skilfully prepared.

Here, now that the tedious accounts are over, you will be able to immerse yourself in your tourist guides, while waiting for the big departure!
