Thefts and attempted car thefts in France: the figures
Every year since 2007, INSEE has conducted the "Living environment and security" survey in partnership with the National Observatory for Delinquency and Criminal Response (ONDRP) and with the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI). . This survey includes a chapter focusing on car thefts and attempted thefts.

Car theft or attempted theft: filing a complaint and insurance
According to the survey carried out in 2019, there were 209,000 car thefts and attempted car thefts in France in 2018. With data covering a larger period from 2011 to 2018, the survey indicates that on average:
24% of victim households suffered car theft;
among them, 92% went to file a complaint and 87% filed a claim with their insurance company;
76% of households have only been victims of one or more theft attempts;
among them, 37% went to the police station or the gendarmerie to lodge a complaint and 41% made a declaration to their insurance company.
It should be noted that 54% of households that were victims of a theft found their car after the incident. In addition, 71% of them say that the damage observed on the vehicle is “significant” or “fairly significant”.

Where and when do the thefts and attempted thefts take place?
On average during the 2011-2018 period, 78% of households that were victims of a theft or an attempt declared that the events occurred in their neighborhood or in their village. More specifically, the facts took place:
for 54% in the street;
for 29% in an open car park;
for 9% in a closed car park;
for 3% in a garage;
for 4% in another place.
Autumn seems to be the season when thefts or attempts are more numerous: the months of September, October and November 2011 to 2018 concentrate on average 31% of incidents.
