How to avoid illnesses while traveling abroad?

Five tips to avoid illness when traveling abroad

The discovery of a foreign country often exposes the traveler to different types of diseases. This risk is all the more important when it comes to countries with a tropical climate . In order to have a pleasant stay, prevention remains the best way to guard against risks. Here are some useful tips that will help you avoid illnesses wherever you go.

1) Update your vaccines

Although updating vaccines is often obvious, it is not superfluous to reiterate it. Among the vaccines to be routinely checked are diphtheria, mumps, polio, measles, rubella and tetanus.

Some countries have an increased risk of hepatitis, yellow or typhoid fever, malaria, rabies, meningitis or dengue fever. For these, extreme caution remains in order.

2) Protect yourself against insect bites

Insect bites are also among the most common risks. Providing protection against these bites is therefore essential. In addition to creams and repellents, antimalarial treatment can be useful to ensure better protection.

A mosquito net over the bed and long clothes, covering the arms and legs, are also recommended. If you opt for loose clothing, check that they are tight at the ankles and wrists.

3) Watch your diet

Water is rarely drinkable in tropical countries. If you want to avoid the many inconveniences associated with its consumption, you should favor purified, boiled or bottled water. In the same vein, do not eat raw vegetables or unpeeled fruit. As for the meat, prefer it well cooked and not raw or rare.

4) Have good hygiene

To avoid any risk of contamination or diarrhea, remember to wash your hands regularly. Use clean or bottled water to brush your teeth.

5) Get used to the climate

It regularly happens that the temperature differences between your place of departure and arrival are greater than 10°. It is therefore preferable to acclimatize gradually before exposing yourself to the sun. Remember to drink plenty of water, wear a hat or cap and use adequate sun protection (cream, sunglasses, etc.).

One last tip

Although prevention is important, you are never safe from a health problem abroad. To face this risk and go abroad with complete peace of mind, it is also important to think of good travel insurance that guarantees at least coverage in the event of hospitalization, medical expenses and repatriation.

Have a good trip !
