How to take out private liability insurance?
Home insurance contracts
Home insurance contracts systematically include rental liability insurance. It covers all the damage that you could inflict on the accommodation itself in the event of a disaster.

These claims can be of different types: water damage, fire or explosion, various degradations… For such events, the bill is generally very heavy! This is why such insurance is compulsory when you are a tenant. It is optional when you are an owner ... but strongly recommended, given the amounts potentially involved.

However, most home insurance offers to extend your liability coverage:

The "third party and neighbor recourse" guarantee covers you against the damage that a loss from your home could inflict on neighboring homes;
Liability coverage extended to your entire private life is also very often offered, under "comprehensive home" contracts.

Multi-risk contracts also include a rental risk guarantee, which covers not the damage that you could cause to a third party, but those that would affect your own person (or your relatives) as well as your property in the event of a claim. A multitude of guarantees are offered depending on the nature of the disaster (water damage, theft, fire, vandalism, broken glass, etc.), and you can also insure personal property (furniture, objects, etc.) that you own in addition to the housing itself.
The comprehensive home insurance contract is generally the simplest, most comprehensive and cheapest solution to cover your private liability and that of your family, in addition to other guarantees generally considered essential.
Auto insurance contracts

In auto insurance contracts, third party liability is called "third party insurance". It is compulsory for driving a vehicle, whether it is rented or not, and is embodied by the "green card" stuck on your windshield. With this insurance, you are thus covered for all bodily injury or material damage that you inflict on third parties if you cause an accident.

The case of rentals
In the case of a car rental from a professional, civil liability insurance must be taken out by the lessor. For rentals between individuals via platforms such as GetAround or OuiCar, civil liability is generally included thanks to a partnership established between the platform and an insurer.
If you rent the car directly from a private individual without going through a platform, you must absolutely verify at least that your civil liability is covered by the rental agreement - which is rarely the case ... If applicable, you must purchase insurance from an independent insurer.
Abroad
The liability insurance for your vehicle also applies if you drive in a foreign country, unless the country is specifically excluded by the insurance contract.
In some countries, such as the United States or Canada, there is a limit on third party liability compensation. If the third party is severely injured and / or files a complaint and initiates legal proceedings, the amount provided for by the insurance may not cover the costs incurred.
You can then take out a Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) guarantee which extends this limit, sometimes up to 1 or 2 million euros.
Other means of coverage
In many situations, insurance covering your civil liability is already taken out without necessarily your knowledge. In other cases, it may be the subject of additional guarantees.

Sports practice
Registration with a sports club necessarily includes liability cover which covers all of its members, as part of a collective contract taken out by the club itself. As a federation licensee, you are also covered if you injure another practitioner or damage equipment.
Other specific insurance policies may include civil liability in the context of a sport: this is particularly the case of insurance offered for skiing in addition to ski passes. These include, in addition to civil liability, a set of guarantees protecting you in the event of an accident (medical costs, disability, assistance, repatriation, etc.)
Even if your civil liability is already covered by another contract (for example home insurance), taking out a more comprehensive specific contract can be useful for certain risky sports activities.

Bank cards
Some premium type bank cards include insurance mechanisms, when the card
