Energy inflation: the French cannot afford to renovate their homes

The energy renovation of the French housing stock is a major challenge for the years to come. The objective is clear: to make this park more efficient, its energy consumption more optimal. And it is not the desire that the French lack ... But the means.
With the rise in energy prices, the French want to renovate their homes ...

The French want to renovate their homes, shows the * OpinionWay barometer for Monexpert-renovation-energie.fr. First of all, the French are faced with an observation: the cost of energy is increasing very sharply. At present, the average monthly energy bill of the French is 184 euros, according to the survey. 1/5 of the French even exceed 200 euros; 36% are between 100 and 199 euros and 31% pay less than 100 euros per month.

Other data: 36% of those polled say they are cold in winter in their home, often or from time to time. This concerns half of tenants and 28% of owners. Thus, nearly one in two French people (48%) believes that it is necessary to do work in their home. 52% even believe that the renovation should be compulsory. 66% would be ready to carry out renovation work to reduce their energy bill, the same proportion to improve the comfort of their home.

Moreover, the energy efficiency of housing is an increasingly observed selling point. And the French are well aware of this: 76% of respondents say that if they wanted to acquire real estate, the energy label (DPE) would be an important criterion in their eyes. 33% of them also believe that a good evaluation in this area makes it easier to resell.
... But their budget does not follow

But despite all this goodwill, it will be difficult for many French people to start renovations. For the half who consider this renovation work necessary, 53% of them explain that they lack the budget. Correspondingly, the average budget envisaged for a renovation project decreases in 2021, 2,546 euros against 3,071 in 2020. Even more, only 38% say they can mobilize more than 1,000 euros if they had to finance renovation work.

This is very small compared to the means required for a renovation project. Thus, in a study published at the end of 2019 on nearly 12,000 energy renovation operations, ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency) estimated a median price for insulation work by the exterior of 12,516 euros. For interior insulation, the median price is 3,248 euros. And for an owner replacing his heating system, the bill would amount to 5,469 euros (median price, aid included).

However, it should be noted that the French are rarely aware of the renovation assistance systems. 66% of them would not be able to mention a single renovation aid. And 58% do not know the DPE of their accommodation.

* 7th edition of the OpinionWay “The French and energy renovation” barometer for Monexpert-renovation-energie.fr, carried out with a representative sample of 2013 people (major French population) constituted according to the quota method (with regard to criteria of sex, age, socio-professional category, category of agglomeration and region of residence). The survey was conducted by self-administered online questionnaire on the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview) system from September 22 to 27, 2021. Margins of uncertainty: 1 to 2.2 points at most for a sample of 2000 respondents.
