The term locum tenens, or its abbreviation locum, that is to say "person taking the place of", indicates a person authorized to exercise a function, in the absence or awaiting a holder.
The short form locum is more common in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Its plural locums is preferred to the Latin plural loca.
In the United States, the full form locum tenens (in the plural: locum tenentes) is preferred.
In France, the term substitute is more easily used, except in the legal professions.
For example :
Locum doctor, in Anglo-Saxon countries, is a doctor who works in place of another absent doctor. In France we rather use the expression "substitute doctor"
Locum tenens is used in the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church to designate the one who heads the patriarchy without having the title.
More generally, the professions which use locums or substitutes are, in a non-exhaustive manner:
Medicine
Dentist
Chiropractor
