The mobile phone is a significant technological advance in the field of communication. It allows anyone, wherever they are, to be in touch with the rest of the world all the time.

On a global scale, the mobile phone greatly facilitates communication especially in remote areas of the world (where there is no traditional telephone infrastructure). The prices of phones are very affordable in most cases, they remain accessible to the middle class and poor in almost all countries.

The disadvantages of the mobile phone

On a global scale, the 4 billion laptops pose an environmental problem that one suspects only very little. Mobile phone batteries contain pollutants that are very dangerous to nature and human health (heavy metals). Specific systems are needed to collect these used batteries and recycle them. In the less advanced countries, these systems are absent or deficient. The batteries are then rejected in nature posing a certain environmental problem.

Mobile phones also consume energy; on average one hour of conversation is equivalent to the energy used by a washing machine at 400C. CO2 emissions from the production of the world's 4 billion mobile phones are estimated at 40 million tonnes, the equivalent of 20 million cars.
