The food chain is divided into 3 categories of living beings. First there are the producers, often plants, but more generally the autotrophic network, that is to say, which is self-sufficient. Then comes the category of consumers: herbivores, primary carnivores (which feed on herbivorous species) and secondary carnivores (which feed on primary carnivores). Finally, the category of decomposers, which includes fungi and bacteria, has the role of degrading the organic matter generated by the other two categories. ©
The food chain characterizes a series of food relations existing between living beings: each living being eats the one who precedes it. There are as many food chains as there are environments. For example, the aquatic food chain is distinguished from the terrestrial food chain. In the aquatic environment, the deep ocean channel is distinct from that of the surface ocean.
The first link in the chain is often of plant origin. For example, in shallow ocean it is phytoplankton. In deep ocean however, in the absence of light, the first organism is the thermophilic bacterium.
The food chain maintains the balance of the ecosystem
The food chain is the result of interactions between three categories of organisms: producers (mostly plants), consumers (herbivores and carnivores) and decomposers (bacteria and fungi). This chain maintains the balance of the ecosystem: producers supply the elements that consumers need, and decomposers degrade organic matter in the other two categories.

A food chain is a sequence of living beings in which everyone is eaten by the one who follows him. The first link in a chain is very often a chlorophyll plant (green) and is called a primary producer. Then there are typically vegetarian animals, then carnivorous animals.
The simplified food chain is like a line. If the arrow means "is eaten by", it is for example: chestnut → field mouse → fox → eagle.
The food chain is a way of describing the relationships between species in an ecosystem. The "food" place of a species is one of the elements of what is called its ecological niche.

Type of organisms
The place of organisms in the food chain depends on their diet. There are several categories of organisms:
• primary producers, almost always plants or plants capable of producing organic matter through photosynthesis, from carbon dioxide and sunlight. They say that they are Autotrophic organisms.
• consumers (animals); there are three types of consumers:
• herbivores that feed on producers, they are also called primary consumers;
• primary carnivores or secondary consumers who feed on herbivores;
• secondary carnivores also called tertiary consumers who feed on primary carnivores
• decomposers (bacteria, fungi) that degrade organic matter of all categories and restore the environment to the mineral elements needed by plants.

Carnivores that have no or very few predators themselves are called super predators. These are the last elements of the chain if we do not count the decomposers. Man is often considered a super predator, although he also eats plants.
