Al Hajj (Hajj), pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia

If Christians do not hesitate to make a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, or to Jerusalem, in Israel, in the footsteps of Christ, Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca, a city in Saudi Arabia, especially at the end of Ramadan. At the time of Muhammad, Mecca had nearly 3,000 inhabitants. Today this Saudi city has more than 1.4 million inhabitants.
The pilgrimage to Mecca, the "Al Hajj", is one of the pillars of Islam, the fifth exactly. It is desirable and recommended that every Muslim make at least once in his life this pilgrimage to Mecca, to the extent that he has the means and the health. This pilgrimage, al-Hajj, is to take place on the last month of the Hegira, between the 7th and the 13th of the month. Every year, millions of pilgrims come to Mecca to obey the fifth pillar of Islam.
Mecca, Makka in Arabic, is the hometown of the Prophet Muhammad who instituted Islam and wrote the Koran according to the words of the Archangel Gabriel. In the seventh century of our era, Mohammed had to leave Mecca hastily, under the persecution of certain merchants, and set off for refuge in Medina. This exile will be the beginning of the Hegira, Hijra in Arabic, meaning "emigration" and will also be the beginning of the Muslim calendar.
At the time already, Mecca was a place of pilgrimage because idols and a mysterious black stone deposited in a cubic construction, the Kaaba, were an object of veneration for pagans and polytheists. The merchants of the time, afraid that Mohammed would drive away the pilgrims and thus their means of subsistence, decided to attack the future Prophet and to drive him away. A few years later, Muhammad and his troops will come to defeat the army of Mecca. Returning to Mecca, Muhammad will go to the Ka'ba and destroy the idols. Before dying, Muhammad will make a pilgrimage to the Ka'ba and recommend to each Muslim to perform it in his turn.
The Kaaba, which according to the Muslim tradition was built by Adam, is a cubic building that for a long time contained a black stone. At the time of Muhammad, the Kaaba contained stone idols that were later swept away by Islam. Its height is over 13m. The interior of the Kaaba is empty and this void, for Muslims, represents the fact that only the one invisible God can be revered.

The Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca is made up of different rituals
