New technologies are important. These
inventions change our daily lives. We almost all have a smartphone or a laptop
... Yet, inventions of the past have had a
gigantic impact on history!
inventions that have changed the world,
and it was women who created them
•
A bit of culture never hurts, and this
time we're going to talk about inventions, not least, because each one of them
is now part of the story. The most astonishing thing, which is likely to amaze
more than one, is that it is women who are at the origin!
1: Car heating
The first heating of the car which
redirected the air coming from the engine to warm the cold toes of the
aristocratic motorists of the 19th century, was invented by Margaret A. Wilcox
in 1893. She also invented a combined garment
2: The Monopoly
Everybody knows this famous game that we
owe to the crisis of 1929, but who knows that it is a woman who had the idea
first of this famous board game? This one was invented by Elizabeth Magie in
1904 under the original name of the "Game of the owner". The game of
Magic was a critique of the injustices of wild capitalism, which makes it all
the more ironic when its game was completely recovered by Charles Darrow 30
years later, which sold it to the Parker Brothers. The company eventually found
Magie and paid $ 500 for his troubles.
3: The emergency exit
It's all stupid, but before her, no one
had thought of it: the exit of help! How many lives saved thanks to Anna
Connelly and her invention of 1887?
4: The liferaft
Indispensable, and invented long before
the encounter between the Titanic and a large ice cube. It was in 1882 that
Maria Beasely said to herself as she looked at the sea, that people had to stop
dying in maritime disasters, so she invented liferafts, but not that ... She
also invented a machine to make of barrels, an invention which made it
extremely rich.

5: Residential solar heating:
Friends of decay and autonomy, thank the
pioneering physicist of solar energy Dr. Maria Telkes. It was by working with
architect Eleanor Raymond to build the first house completely heated by solar
energy in 1947 that the idea came to him.
6: The medical syringe
Letitia Geer is the cause of the phobia
of a large part of the planet, she created the medical syringe usable with one
hand in 1899. Ask yourself how many buttocks were holed by this small
invention, simply colossal…
7: The modern electric refrigerator
Do not say "fridge", this is a
brand whose full name is "Frigidaire", the exact name of this object
is "refrigerator"! This little wonder became indispensable and much
improved over time, we owe it to Florence Parpart who created it in 1914. But
it was not its test in 1900, it also filed a patent for a street cleaning
machine ...
8: The ice cream machine
Nancy Johnson invented the ice cream
freezer in 1843, a crank freezer system that allowed to produce, as its name
suggests, ice cream. Notice to the amateurs, it took 45 minutes of effort to
get ice ...
10: Most telecommunication technologies
The physicist Shirley Jackson was the
first black woman to receive a doctorate from MIT, in 1973, hat low! While
working at Bell Laboratoires, his work has allowed other inventors to create
portable fax (fax), touch telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables and
technology behind caller ID and of the call on hold.
11: The dishwasher
This woman made a scandal, she allowed
herself to go to meetings without escorts, be it her husband or a member of her
family, but she had to sell her invention: the dishwasher. It will eventually
open its factory. The dishwasher was invented by Josephine Cochrane in 1887.
12: Wireless transmissions
Hedy Lamarr, who was not content with
being a world star of the cinema, is at the origin of the wifi and the GPS
which without it could never have existed ... She created a communications
system during the Second War Worldwide to control the torpedoes by radio waves.
It is to it that we owe the foundations of technological bases such as Wi-Fi
and GPS.
13: Video surveillance
Estrosi must love this woman very much
... Marie Van Brittan Brown created a closed-circuit television system that was
patented in 1969. Its aim was to help people ensure their own safety, since the
police were too slow to respond to calls for help in his New York neighborhood.
His invention is the foundation for modern CCTV systems used for the security
of the home and the work of the police today.
14: Square-sided paper bags
It's all stupid, but these bags that are
making a big comeback since the ban on plastic bags had to be invented one day
so that we can enjoy it, and we owe this to Margaret Chevalier who filed his
patent for a machine able to produce square-bottomed bags in 1871, after a long
legal battle with another machinist, Charles Anan. The latter tried to gain
credit by arguing that such a brilliant invention could not have been created
by a girl. This gentleman has fortunately been forgotten by the story ...
15: Central heating
Alice Parker invented a gas-fired
central heating system in 1919. It was the first time that an inventor had the
idea of using natural gas to heat a house ... And his invention is at the
origin of all the central heating systems that we know today.
16: The Kevlar
This material is of the bullet (of
revolver), especially that it resists bullets! The chemist Stephanie Kwolek
invented the Kevlar fiber used to make bullet-proof vests. Five times tougher
than steel, kevlar is used in about 200 other uses.
17: the computer and the "bug"
She changed the story !!! Dr. Grace
Murray Hopper, Rear Admiral of the United States Navy, was also a computer
scientist who invented the COBOL, "the first computer-friendly business
software". She was also the first person to use the term "bug"
to describe a glitch in a computer system, after finding a butterfly as the
cause of the troubles encountered in her computer.
18: Beer
At the risk of annoying the most macho,
it is indeed a woman who invented beer! Beer historian Jane Peyton says that
ancient Mesopotamian women were the first to develop, sell, and even drink
beer. Although it may be difficult to pinpoint exactly who is behind the beer,
it was "invented" thousands of years ago. So, next time you raise a
glass, make a toast to Ninkasi, Sumerian goddess of the brewery and beer!
