THE IMPORTANCE OF READING
What is reading for a writer? Essential work, says Flaubert;
"Reading, a door open to an enchanted world," Francois Mauriac
replied. We talk about Stephen King as inspired by Edgar Poe, it is said that
Joseph Conrad and Jack London took an example on Melville. Indeed, few authors
have ever read books other than their own. It is incontestable that a writer is
above all a reader who is influenced by what he reads. Becoming a good writer
also passes by being a good reader.
Reading: food of the mind
Like any creative, the writer is a great curious person who will
find in reading an incontestable source of inspiration. Of course, this is not
about plagiarizing anyone, nevertheless, it is certain that reading stimulates
the imagination.
It would therefore be a question of reading from the existent to
create the imaginary.
By reading, one escapes from the real and automatically, one
generates from the creation, for even if at this precise moment, one does not
create words, each one has its own representation. The proof: our mental images
are so strong that we are sometimes disappointed when we look at the
cinematographic adaptation of a novel that we liked.
Formatting ideas
After many hours spent reading the biggest or other lesser known
authors, you have more ideas for your topic, which is a first step, but far
from being an end in itself. In fact, it would even be fairer to say that the
work is just beginning.
It is now a matter of ordering your ideas and making them
understandable to everyone.
Once again, reading will help you for this second step.
Enriching vocabulary
Attention to the choice of words: a word can change everything.
This may seem a little exaggerated, but, on closer inspection, we realize that
this is not the case. The French language is an infinitely complex language and
very rich in words. A term used may hinder the comprehension or the fluidity of
the text, which too heavy, will have less impact on the reader and less
credibility in his eyes, because not to realize that one reads a book as long
as one is taken by this one remains the finest compliment that can be given to
a writer.
It is therefore necessary for an author to possess a comprehensive
vocabulary. By reading, the brain automatically records new words that, and you
will be the first surprised, will not fail to reappear at the appropriate time.
Here is a list of dialogue verbs that will be useful to set the
tone for the discussions of the characters in your novel.
Mastery of spelling
Using the right term for better understanding is therefore
necessary, but that is not all.
Mastering spelling is also a priority, because if the publishing
houses employ editors, the publisher or the reading committee of the latter
will hardly appreciate an author who does not control by the agreement of the
past participle or the spelling of common words. Reading, spelling and syntax
are definitely improving ... To make yourself understood, to convey a message
is always possible, however, the forms you put there will make all the
difference. Writer or "artist" misunderstood ...?!
Reading is therefore an incontestable source for the exercise of
writing. However, it is not the only one. The media in general, television or
radio, or traveling or observing the world around us are also sources of
inspiration that should not be overlooked and which can easily feed the
author's pen.
