Find out what the five major types of renewable energies are and
what their specificities are.
There are five main types of renewable energies: solar, wind,
hydro, biomass and geothermal. Their common characteristic is that they do not
produce polluting emissions (or little), and thus help to fight the greenhouse
effect.
Photovoltaic or thermal solar energy
Solar energy is produced by the sun's radiation. One distinguishes
the photovoltaic energy which, as its name implies, transforms the energy
contained in the solar radiation into electricity, solar thermal energy which,
in turn, transforms this same radiation into heat.
The air at the origin of wind energy
The ancestors of windmills are windmills. Wind turbines generate
energy, for example electricity, from the displacement of air masses.
Hydro power thanks to marine currents
Hydraulic energy is directly obtained by water, whether from dams,
tides and currents, waves, or the encounter of fresh water and salt water. In
order to remain renewable, the thermal energy of the seas, which derives from
the difference in temperature between deep and surface waters, must be used
with caution, in particular to avoid any disturbance of the natural flows of
the seas.
Biomass energy from organic matter
Biomass energy includes wood, biofuels (from plants such as
rapeseed or beetroot) or biogas. This energy is produced by burning or
metabolizing organic matter.
Draw energy from soil, geothermal energy
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy derived from the extraction
of the energy contained in the soil. It can be used for heating as well as for
electricity production. It is one of the only energies not dependent on
atmospheric conditions.
It should be noted, however, that for geothermal energy to remain
durable, the rate at which this heat is drawn must not exceed the speed at
which the heat travels within the Earth.
Renewable energies
Renewable energies (hydro, solar, wind, geothermal and biomass) are
developing intensely throughout the world, driven by the need to combat global
warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
What is renewable energy?
An energy is said to be renewable when it is produced by a source
that nature constantly renews, unlike an energy dependent on sources that are
exhausted. Renewable energies are very diverse but they all come from two main
natural sources:
• the Sun: emits radiation that can be transformed into electricity
or heat, generates unequal temperature and pressure zones at the source of
winds, generates the water cycle, allows plant growth and generation biomass;
• Earth, whose internal heat can be recovered from the surface.
The renewable nature of these energies, their low emission of
waste, polluting discharges and greenhouse gases are advantages. But their
power, relatively disseminated, is much lower than that of highly concentrated
non-renewable energies. They can be - in the case of solar and wind -
"intermittent" and hardly storable because they are immediately
transformed into electricity, requiring then the punctual contribution of other
energies. Their implementation also involves heavy investments, even if over
time they become increasingly competitive in the face of fossil fuels.
