On Saturday, ten members of the same family were killed in
the province of El Jadida. The man accused of this carnage is himself a member
of this family and suffers from mental disorders.
It is one of the most atrocious crimes ever seen in Morocco.
On Saturday (April 23rd), the gendarmerie brigade of Sidi Ismail, in the
province of El Jadida (160 km from Rabat), is alerted for a carnage committed
in the douar (village) of Lagzamra. Arrived on the spot, the police are
horrified by the scene: ten corpses of the same family violently assassinated
with the knife. The alleged perpetrator of the killing killed his two parents,
his wife, his uncle and cousins, and his uncle and other relatives, aged
between 17 and 80 years. Four of the suspect's daughters were nevertheless
spared. The gendarmes found them in one of the rooms of the house.
The alleged perpetrator, now incarcerated, would suffer from
mental disorders. Testimonies of inhabitants of the Douar of Lagzamra mention
the "crises" that the individual knew.
40% of Moroccans suffer from mental disorders
In the small mosque of the village, about one hundred people
were gathered for the burial of the victims on Sunday, April 24, after the
prayer of Al Asr (around 4 pm). The officials of the region have obviously made
the trip and at their head, the governor of El Jadida, Mouad Jamai.
This case is likely to have repercussions throughout the
country, notably because it reveals the kingdom's deficiencies in the
management of mental illnesses. At a time when epidemiological surveys by the
Moroccan Ministry of Health reveal that "40% of the Moroccan population
over the age of 15 suffers or has suffered from a mental disorder of obviously
variable intensity" Doubling the capacity of reception and training more
specialists are still far from being achieved.
