Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci born in Vinci
(Tuscany) on April 15, 1452 and died in Amboise (Touraine) on May 2, 1519, is a
Florentine painter and a man of universal spirit, both artist , Organizer of
shows and festivals, scientist, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter,
sculptor, architect, urbanist, botanist, musician, poet, philosopher and
writer.
After his childhood at Vinci, Leonardo was a pupil to the famous
Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea de l Verrocchio. His first important
works were carried out at the service of Duke Ludovic Sforza in Milan. He then
worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice and spent the last years of his life in
France, at the invitation of King Francis I.
Leonardo da Vinci is often described as the archetype and symbol of
the Renaissance man, a universal genius, a humanist, observer and experimental
philosopher, with a "rare gift of the intuition of space" and whose
Infinite curiosity is only equaled by the force of invention. Many authors and
historians regard him as one of the greatest painters of all time and some as
the most talented person in the greatest number of different fields having ever
lived
It is first of all as a painter that Leonardo da Vinci is
recognized. Two of his works, La Joconde and La Cène, are world-famous
paintings, often copied and parodied, 2 and his drawing of the Man of Vitruvius
is also included in numerous derivative works. Only fifteen works have reached
us; This small number is due to his constant and sometimes disastrous
experiments with new techniques and his chronic procrastination. Nevertheless,
these few works, joined to his notebooks containing drawings, scientific
diagrams and reflections on the nature of painting, are a legacy to the
following generations of artists; Many of them considering it as only matched
by Michelangelo.
As an engineer and inventor, Leonardo develops ideas far ahead of
his time, like the plane, the helicopter, the submarine and even the
automobile. Very few of his projects are realized or even only realizable
during his lifetime but some of his smaller inventions like a machine to
measure the elastic limit of a cable enter the world of manufacture. As a
scientist, Leonardo da Vinci has greatly advanced knowledge in the fields of
anatomy, civil engineering, optics and hydrodynamics.
