London is the capital and the main city of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants are called Londoners and the agglomeration comprises about 7,684,700 people.
London (London)
London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom.

The Greater London area (Greater London in French) is an administrative region that covers 1,579 km², with a population of 7,172,036 (2001). It includes 32 administrative divisions, the London Boroughs, plus the City of London. The latter covers only a small part of the center: the business district to the east.

The Thames crosses London from west to east. Many tributaries of this river have been covered or transformed into sewers. For example, the Fleet River was covered and transformed into a street (Fleet Street), the former journalists' street, whose route follows that of the river.

The most famous part of London is the West End, which includes Oxford Street department stores, theaters, and neighborhoods such as Soho, Covent Garden, Mayfair.

Originally a Celtic settlement, the Romans made it the capital of the Britannia province under the name of Londinium.

London also houses the famous British Museum, compared to some by the Louvre in Paris for the importance of its collections, both in number and quality.

An ecological tower (windows open and natural light is widely available) of 180 m, nicknamed "the pickle" (the Gherkin or named after its address "30 St Mary Ax"), has just been inaugurated in 2004.
An Imperial Legacy
• The world's role in London is largely the result of history. In the nineteenth century, it was the political, economic and cultural capital of the British Empire, comprising a quarter of the world's population. The major decisions are all made in London, where the Victorian style (named after Queen Victoria) marks the great buildings of the city center, like the station of Saint-Pancras. The city is the gateway to colonial products and the gateway to the manufactured goods of a country which is then the "factory of the world".
A cultural center
• London is also a city with considerable cultural influence. The importance of the English-speaking world and of English as an international language make London's events and cultural trends widely known throughout the world. Museums in London are home to collections of art from around the world, such as the British Museum or the National Gallery. In terms of contemporary art or musical creation, London maintains a worldwide reputation.
• The legacy of major English bands such as the Beatles is still alive, and London clubbing sets the tone for many nights in the world. The "Fashion Week" in London contributes to the image of a young and creative city.
• In the field of sport, the city is at the forefront of the media with the 2012 Olympics.
