The university of King Abdulaziz was founded in 1967 in Jeddah, as
a national university; In 1974, it became a public university. In 2010, it had
2,300 teachers and 42,900 students (men and women).
Its objective is to contribute to the dissemination of higher
education in the western part of Saudi Arabia; As such, it occupies a central
place in the higher education institutions of the country.
The university of King Abdulaziz is named after the founder of
Saudi Arabia, peace to his soul. The university was established in 1387 AH
(1967 AD) as a national university. Its objective was to contribute to the
dissemination of higher education in the Western area of Saudi Arabia. This
dream was made possible by the continued efforts and dedication of the Saudi
population. The members of the Inauguration Committee had the opportunity to
meet King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz - peace to his soul - who approved and supported
the idea of the creation of the university. The Foundation Committee was
subsequently established and led by King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz and His Highness
the then Minister of Education, Sheikh Hasan Bin Abdullah Al-Sheikh.
The university began its first academic year in 1388 AH (1968 AD)
with the establishment of a preparatory curriculum for a limited number of
students: 68 men and 30 women. By the end of the first year, the university had
set up its first faculty: the Faculty of Economics and Management. The
following year saw the creation of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences.
In 1394 AH (1974 AD), in accordance with the Saudi government's
directives, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution that transformed the
university of King Abdulaziz into a public university. The university has
therefore moved from being a national university to being a public university.
At the same time, another resolution attached the College of Shari`ah and
Islamic Studies and the College of Higher Education - created in 1369 AH (1949
AD) to Mecca - at the University of King Abdulaziz. However, after the
establishment of Umm Al-Qura University, the two institutions were attached to
the latter.
Over the years, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has promoted and
supported the young university of King Abdulaziz. At present, King Abdulaziz
University is a modern and progressive university with 82,152 students (men and
women). It occupies a fundamental place in the institutions of higher learning
of our Kingdom.
The University of King Abdulaziz is made up of two separate
campuses. According to Islamic traditions, one campus is reserved for men and
another for women. Each of these two campuses provides sports, leisure and
cultural facilities for students. In addition, students and teachers benefit
from a large library equipped with the most modern technology. In the space of
four decades, the university has become a leading institution of higher
education, both locally and internationally. Taking into account the evolution
of society, the university's curricula are designed to equip graduates with
professional skills that can be exploited in the world of work today.
As a result of the establishment of King Abdulaziz University,
other university branches were attached to the university, including the Taibah
University Al-Madinah Munawwarah branch, the Tabuk University branch and The
antenna of the Jazan University. Taibah University became an independent
university in 1424 AH and the Tabuk and Jazan universities are now also
independent. At present, the University of King Abdulaziz includes branches of
North Borders University, Araar College and Rafha College.
Since its inception, the university has grown progressively in
terms of quality and quantity. It now ranks among the most prestigious
universities in the Kingdom by the number of students it welcomes, the number of
fields of scientific and theoretical studies and unique specializations in
marine sciences, geology, nuclear engineering, meteorology Aeronautics, mining
and medical engineering.
The University of King Abdulaziz was one of the first to offer
higher education to women, with the simultaneous opening of the section for
women and the one for men.
In order to facilitate the access of the Saudi population to higher
education, the university offers both standard curricula and external
curricula. The Deanery for Distance Education was created in response to
scientific, technical and civilian advances. The University of King Abdulaziz
allows students to evolve in the careers they have chosen and become
responsible and productive citizens.
The Council of the University is chaired by His Highness the
Minister of Higher Education. Its members include the president of the
university, vice-presidents of the university, and deans of independent
faculties and deans.
