How to secure a hotel room for a young child?

child in hotelRegardless of the number of stars, hotel rooms are never completely suitable for babies and young children who like to explore their new environment. As parents, you must take care to reduce the risks to which they may be exposed.

Why should the hotel room be secured?

If it is perfectly natural to take all the necessary precautions to protect your baby at home, it is a reflex that is not always necessary when you travel. However, the dangers are multiple and, sometimes, a simple gesture of common sense is enough to eliminate them. Among the most common risks are:

Hot spots: fireplaces, radiators or hot water in the bathroom

Furniture: sharp corners of furniture where your baby can bump his head, or high furniture (like the king size bed) from which the child will have trouble climbing down on his own

Wires: cords and electrical outlets that baby can pull or the wires of blinds that hang at his height

Microbes: garbage cans, remote controls or various objects that are real reservoirs of germs

What do you need to bring to secure your room?

Securing a hotel room cannot be improvised. You can take various objects with you which are often useful or which may be missing on site. These include:

A cradle or cot whose corners must be rounded or protected by foam.

Tape or masking

rags

Anti-pinch devices such as door stoppers or closing dampers

storage bags

How to secure your hotel room?

Cut short attempts to escape : As the baby tends to roam the room, it is advisable to limit his movements by installing him inside his cradle or his travel cot. In this way, he will no longer have access to the balcony.

Corner hunting: You can protect the corners of furniture by taping rags to them to reduce the risk of injury.

Elevate everything: All dangerous objects should be collected in storage bags out of reach of your young child. It is important to pay particular attention to the telephone, the alarm clock, the coffee machine, the pens, etc. The same applies to the trash cans in the toilets and the bathroom.

No wires in sight: Try to eliminate any wires that your child might see and consequently pull. As for the television, check its stability by trying to pull on the cord. If you are out of the room, unplug the cord from each appliance and coil it up, taking care to place it high enough. Tie a knot in the threads of blinds or curtains and put them out of your child's reach.

Bright idea: To cut short baby's urge to put his fingers in the outlet, install covers on the electrical outlets, or failing that, protect them with adhesive tape.

No more slamming doors: Lock doors and windows and make sure your baby can't accidentally lock themselves in a room. All it takes is a draft and a slamming door for baby to pinch his fingers. To avoid this, install a door stopper. You can do the same with drawers and cupboards by installing dampers.

Sunscreen does not taste good : Avoid leaving your toilet bag or beauty products lying around in the bathroom, it is better to lock them in the cupboard provided for this purpose.

The young child is particularly vulnerable when traveling because he is curious by nature and the hotel room is a new space for him to explore. You must therefore put yourself in his shoes and ensure that he is exposed to as little potential risk as possible.

However, despite all these precautions, zero risk does not exist. This is why taking out travel insurance is recommended in order to provide you with better coverage in the event of an accident during your stay.
