 THE SELF-ENTREPRENEURIAL DANCE TEACHER

The self-employed dance teacher must comply with regulations specific to the discipline taught. Indeed, he will not have to follow the same rules if he offers classical dance or salsa lessons, for example. To see more clearly, find our guide dedicated to the self-employed dance teacher.

The profession of independent dance teacher

The role of a dance teacher
Intervening with children or adults, the dance teacher has for mission to teach one or more styles of dance to his students. The disciplines are generally grouped into three distinct categories:

performance dances such as jazz, classical dance and contemporary dance, for which the regulations are specific;
society dances, like twist, madison, country or even salsa;
competitive dances, including but not limited to waltz, tango, hip-hop and samba.
Whatever type of dance he teaches, the teacher may have several main tasks on a daily basis:

assess the level of its students in order to offer them an adapted program;
teach dance and its prerequisites (warm-up, movements, figures, stretching, etc.);
correct the postures and movements of his students, in particular with a view to preserving their safety;
organize performances, such as galas.

Clients of a freelance dance instructor
The self-employed dance teacher can impart his knowledge to both adults and children, whether they are beginners or experienced. Its intervention could moreover meet various objectives.

Awakening: most often, this teacher introduces students to dance in order to awaken them to discipline and develop their artistic sensitivity. This can be done in particular in a school making use of its services or in a leisure center, for example.
Leisure: the teaching of dance can also be done for students who wish to practice as a leisure activity. The lessons will then generally be given on a weekly basis, with both amateur and experienced dancers.
Improvement: the independent dance teacher can also teach experienced dancers, wishing to improve or practice in competition. As such, it may in particular offer its services to dance schools.
One-off learning: more and more often, individuals want to learn to dance for a very specific occasion (a wedding, an anniversary, etc.). The intervention of the dance teacher will then be limited in time and in order to achieve a clearly established goal.
 The profile of the self-employed dance teacher

The qualities of a freelance dance teacher
The dance teacher is above all an artist who excels in his art. However, other qualities are necessary to be able to transmit knowledge.

Pedagogy: the self-employed dance teacher must make his students want to learn and improve. For this, he must know how to motivate the participants, encourage them, interest them and be patient. These are all essential qualities for apprentice dancers to learn to love dance.
Passion: it is his passion for the discipline that keeps his students interested. It translates into a real musical and choreographic culture, allowing it to reinvent itself and continue to motivate its students, session after session.
Versatility: beyond the different styles of dance he is likely to teach, he often has to deal with students of unequal level. It is therefore essential that he knows how to adapt in order to offer a program to suit everyone.
Availability: The hours of a self-employed dance teacher are rarely fixed. Having to comply with the schedules of his students, mainly if he gives individual lessons, he has to work evenings and weekends.

The training of a dance teacher
As we mentioned above, the regulations are not the same depending on the type of dance taught.

Classical, modern and jazz: compulsory training
If he teaches classical, jazz or contemporary dance, the independent dance teacher must have:

the state diploma (DE) as a dance teacher;
or the certificate of aptitude for the functions of dance teacher, the level of which is higher than DE.
It is therefore the DE of dance teacher that must be obtained first, before possibly taking the aptitude certificate once your experience has been confirmed. To register for the training, you must first obtain the Technical Aptitude Examination (EAT), to verify that the candidate has the artistic and technical skills necessary for the format.

Classical, modern and jazz: the exceptions to the rule
In some specific situations, it is possible to become a jazz, contemporary or classical dance teacher without holding a state diploma or a certificate of aptitude. This is particularly the case if:

you have obtained a diploma recognized as equivalent to the State diploma (in particular a foreign one);
you have been a choreographic artist for at least 3 years in a renowned establishment (ballet of the Opéra national de Paris, national choreographic center, etc.);
your reputation or your confirmed experience in teaching dance is worth the right to be exempted.

Hip-hop, salsa, country ...: recommended training
For all dances other than contemporary, classical or jazz dance, you can become a dance teacher without any specific diploma. Indeed, the regulations do not require specific professional qualifications.

However, it is generally advisable to take training in order to hone your skills and reassure your clients about your level. For this, you have several possibilities, including the CFID (Federal Certificate of Initiator in Dance) or specific courses for each discipline (samba, hip-hop, madison, etc.).

The steps to become a self-employed dance teacher

The condition of good repute
As the Education Code reminds us, it is impossible to become a dance teacher if you have been the subject of a sentence without suspension of more than 4 months for one of the following reasons:

rape offenses;
sexual assault;
sexual assault on a minor;
or pimping.

Checking physical skills
Before offering his lessons to students, whatever their level, the self-employed dance teacher must ensure that the students have a medical certificate. Not having to present any contraindication to the practice of the taught discipline, this document must be renewed each year.

Adapting the program to children
The curriculum for children depends on the age of the students, especially when it comes to teaching classical, jazz and contemporary dance.

For children from 4 to 5 years old: whatever the nature of the dance, only a bodily awakening activity can be offered.
For children aged 6 and 7: for jazz, classical and contemporary dance, the program can only include an introductory activity and, therefore, must not include techniques specific to the discipline taught (figures, movements , etc.).
For children from 4 to 7 years old: for all dances, the activities offered must not include straining the body, straining the joints, or excessive extensions.

The dance teacher's insurance
If the self-employed dance teacher has premises, he or she must take out comprehensive insurance, covering it in particular against the risk of fire and water damage.

In other cases, no insurance is compulsory to teach dance, including if he gives lessons in a room made available to him (rental of a room, etc.). However, two contracts may be of interest.

RC Pro: Professional liability insurance covers material and physical damage that the dance teacher could cause to a third party. It is therefore useful, insofar as the risk of accidents during teaching cannot be ruled out.
Legal protection: this is often useful insurance for self-employed people. Completely optional, it can provide for the assumption of legal costs in the event of a dispute, in particular with a student.

Self-Employed Rules for the Dance Teacher
For the independent dance teacher, the status of self-employed person also requires following certain specific rules.

Online creation: your self-employed dance teaching business must be created on the Internet. In particular, you can use the URSSAF Auto-Entrepreneur site for this. On this occasion, you will also have to choose your frequency of declaration of turnover and payment of your contributions, namely every month or every 3 months.
Declaration of turnover: even if you have no income during the reporting period, you must declare your turnover on the URSSAF website (enter 0 € in the absence of income). Note also that your turnover is limited to € 72,500 per year.
