Breakdown: how much does it cost to tow a vehicle?
Despite all the care that you can give to your car, despite the regularity with which you carry out its maintenance, despite your caution at the wheel, a breakdown can happen to anyone. Anywhere. Whenever. That's why it's always worth bearing in mind the prices of car towing, both on the road and on the highway. Here's what you need to know about it.
The cost of highway towing
The towing of a car on the highway, because of the dangerousness of the operation, is strictly regulated by law. From calling the convenience store to transporting the vehicle, here is how to proceed.
What to do in the event of a breakdown on the motorway?
Have you broken down on the highway? Before calling a tow truck, park your vehicle on the hard shoulder, as close to the barrier as possible. Turn on your hazard lights, put on your yellow vest and get out of the vehicle to position your warning triangle. As a reminder, vest and triangle have been compulsory since 2008 on board any vehicle.
To benefit from towing on the motorway, it is in principle compulsory to use the emergency call terminals, rather than a personal mobile phone. Indeed, these are geolocated and put you in touch with the motorway company. They will make it easier to locate you and to call in an authorized repairman more quickly.

A range of towing prices
On the motorway, the prices of breakdown and tug operators, who are authorized to operate, are set each year by ministerial decree. Four types of intervention – and therefore vehicle towing rates – exist:
- On-site troubleshooting, for a maximum duration of 30 minutes, and a price of 124.83 euros including tax;
The towing of the vehicle to a rest area, for repair there (30 minutes at most), and a price of 124.83 euros including tax for a vehicle whose GVW is less than 1.8 tonnes and 154 .36 euros including VAT above and up to 3.5 tonnes;
"Simple" towing to the workshop (therefore without repair), for a price of 124.83 euros including tax for a vehicle with a GVW of less than 1.8 tonnes and 154.36 euros including tax beyond not exceeding 3.5 tonnes;
Towing to a place you choose (your home for example), within the limit of 5 km after the motorway exit, for the same rates as the two previous categories, increased beyond the 5 km included in the package .
Please note that these rates are increased by 50% between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as a whole.

Towing/recovery of a car on the road
On the road, towing/recovery operations are less supervised, and prices are more liberal. It is nevertheless possible to determine an average of the prices charged by professionals
A variable price according to the providers
How much does towing outside the motorway network cost? On average, the prices are as follows:
For 10 km traveled, 100 euros during the day and 140 euros at night,
For 20 km traveled, 120 euros during the day and 180 euros at night,
For 30 km travelled, 150 euros during the day and 200 euros at night,
For 40 km traveled, 200 euros during the day and 250 euros at night,
For 50 km travelled, 230 euros during the day and 300 euros at night.
However, it should be emphasized that these prices may vary depending on the region, the time of year (during the big departures during the summer holidays, for example, prices can soar) and the service providers.
Potential coverage by insurance
Having your vehicle towed in the event of a breakdown therefore represents a budget, which is not necessarily anticipated. Fortunately, remember that your insurance company may cover all or part of these rates, depending on the conditions of your contract. And this, whether the failure occurred on the secondary network or on the motorway network.
Thus, we can only strongly recommend that you call your insurer during a breakdown. In the event of support, he will put you in contact with a convenience store located nearby if necessary, and/or will reimburse you for any costs incurred.
