In which countries is travel insurance compulsory to stay there?

Although purchasing travel insurance is in many cases optional, it can be particularly useful for destinations with known health risks or for which medical costs are particularly high, such as in the United States. For some countries, the travel insurance certificate is nevertheless mandatory to obtain a visa.

The list of countries where travel insurance is compulsory

In France, the tourism code stipulates that your travel agent is required to offer you travel insurance to protect your stay. Its subscription is optional.

To travel to certain countries, a prior request for a tourist visa will be required from the Embassy or Consulate concerned. In the list of documents to be provided in order to constitute your file, you will need to provide an insurance certificate justifying coverage of medical and health costs or repatriation assistance in the event of accident or illness during your stay.

The subscription of travel insurance and its certificate is therefore mandatory for the following 5 countries:

Some nationals of foreign countries who wish to travel to the Schengen area must also first apply for a visa from the European country they plan to visit. The list of countries whose nationals must follow a Schengen visa procedure can be found here.

To obtain the Schengen visa, travel insurance covering repatriation costs and emergency medical costs for an amount of at least € 30,000 will be necessary and must be attached to the file.

Travel insurance soon to be compulsory for traveling to Thailand?

In the five countries mentioned above, Thailand may soon join the list. Indeed, local authorities are considering making travel insurance compulsory. Faced with the influx of tourists into the country (the number is still increasing) and the increasing cost of medical treatment, the Thai state wants to lower the bill and distribute travel insurance on arrival.
