The Importance of Technology
Today's society is no longer that of the past. Since the
emergence of technology, our society is constantly changing. It must be noted
that the dominant values of our era are the
transformation, the transmission and the control of the data. We live in a computerized world whose central role
has been delegated to new technologies, in particular those that are intimately
related to information technology. In our day, it would be impossible to
imagine a society without technology, as the importance in everyday life is
constantly evolving.
The term "technology" refers to the set of tools
that facilitate the use, creation, exchange and management of data.
Nowadays, nobody can do without devices designed to handle
this type of data. Over time, technology has become widespread and then
democratized to the point of invading us, despite us. Everyone is free to use
the means provided as he sees fit, everything is within a click range. So, one
click is enough to know the news in the world and to get what we want.
The development of high technology such as computer
technology, the Internet and the telephone has not only helped to break down
barriers to communication, but also bridged the gap between citizens around the
world. Of course, new technologies are revolutionizing the world, but there is
of course a counterpart: The destructive power of armaments is constantly
evolving. In this sense, technology affects societies in terms of the
development of advanced economies while improving the quality of life for those
who have these information and communication technologies.
Modern technologies have also made it possible to produce
more food, to increase the means of transport and to offer a greater range of
products of all kinds. Another advantage, and not least: medical discoveries.
Either, advances that have profoundly changed our lives.
From one end to the other, technology creates links between
the inhabitants of the extremes of the planet, bringing together different
cultures and human histories. At the end of the day, we need technologies that,
besides contributing to a safer daily life, embellish it.
Technology is everywhere in our lives Impossible to escape: techno
mania overwhelms news, monopolizes conversations, stimulates the economy and
anxiety those who are not yet connected. Networks, computers and smart objects
are changing our everyday habits, working methods, relationships and
recreation. As we approach the year 2000 and its famous bug, we realize
suddenly how dependent we are. The world's richest man, Bill Gates, has built
his fortune on software ... But the revolution is still far from having reached
the entire planet where four billion people in the third world do not yet have
access to software electricity or telephone. And even in France, Internet users
still represent only a minority: 23% of French people have a computer at home -
60% in Sweden - and only 20% of households have a modem and an Internet
connection . But starting in 1996 with the economic upturn and the approach of
the year 2000 people recover their appetite for the higt-tech objects and
everything that embodies the future, science and modernity. Yet even the most
connected are not dazzled by the cyber civilization. The Internet, in
particular, creates a contradictory mix of fascination and concern. Users
consider the network as an information tool, but are wary of the reliability
and the profusion of its contents as well as the publicity, considered
intrusive. The fear of change, the mistrust of these high-tech objects cause
some to revolt. The "neo-luddites" are fighting against the
technology considered as the spearhead of globalization, which levels cultures
and makes people passive, submissive and only productive. It must be said that
there are really disturbing aspects of cyberculture. Should we regulate
everything? Americans prefer to let the market organize itself. In France,
Lionel Jospin announced for the year 2000 a major law on the "information
society", which aims to solve the problems of consumer protection on the
network, copyright, piracy and confidentiality Exchanges. But whatever the
legislative safeguards the cyberworld wants first of all an area of freedom where borders and social barriers are in principle abolished.
Cable, satellite and fiber optic networks have woven an electronic cocoon
around the globe. It is possible to enter instantly into contact with anyone on
the surface of the planet, to dialogue
