Hospitality is an act of welcome for foreigners and visitors. It is a virtue in some religions.
The value of sharing "at home"
For philosophers, hospitality can be defined as the sharing of "at home" as a value. Sociologists see it as a social fact, a rite of passage, a moment of cohabitation. Montandon reconciled each of them by saying: "Hospitality, a way of living together, governed by rules, rites and laws. In many cultures, the host is content to mark his benevolence with the word "welcome, welcome, marshaban bik, etc.", but reception can also lead to a more formal exchange: for example, of tradition in Haiti, when one receives someone to express his satisfaction by saying "Honor!", to which the Master of House does not fail to answer "Respect!".
Some consider that hospitality has gradually declined as the state took over some charitable prerogatives through redistribution. But the practice of private hospitality still exists, within the framework of a guest house, ducouchsurfing (canapégiature) or the family welcome holiday. And in tourist destinations, beyond the simple service, the hospitality vis-à-vis the foreign tourist involves not only the professionals but also the residents. Although the Anglo-Saxons refer to the hospitality industry as the hospitality industry, hotels and restaurants provide hospitality, but not hospitality except for foreign tourists.
Hospitality and Religions
Islam

Hospitality is also one of the virtues of Islam, the precepts of the Quran advocating the reception and protection of the people of the Book: in its original sense, dhimma was a "contract" by which Muslim society practiced hospitality and tolerance towards non-Muslim monotheists, and granted them the right to practice their religion. On the basis of these principles, hospitality to foreigners, understood as a non-Muslim believer, but also by extension of all human beings, has become one of the most valued virtues of Muslim societies7.
