Salmane ben Abdelaziz Al Saud, born December 31, 19351 in Riyadh, is a member of the Saudi dynasty. Governor of Riyadh for more than fifty years, he was appointed Minister of Defense of Saudi Arabia on November 5, 20112, and Crown Prince on June 18, 2012. He succeeds his half brother Abdallah on January 23, 2015 as King of 'Saudi Arabia.

Government Career

Salmane was governor of the province of Riyadd from 1955 to 1960 and then from 1963 to 20113.
On November 5, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Defense by his half-brother King Abdallah. He replaces his brother Sultan, who died shortly before 5.10. It is Prince Fahd bin Abdallah ben Mohammed Al Saud who replaces Sultan as Minister of Aviation.
His brother Nayef, crown prince, died on June 16, 2012 and on June 18, the Council of allegiance chose Salmane as the new crown prince. Salmane is also appointed Deputy Prime Minister. His other brother Ahmed was appointed Minister of the Interior.
In the Saudi political context, Salmane is generally considered to be a traditionalist, but less linked to the ultra-conservative religious than his brother Nayef8.
King of Saudi Arabia
Accession to the Throne
He became King of Saudi Arabia following the death of his half brother Abdallah on January 23, 2015.13 He was the sixth son of the founder of the Kingdom, Abdelaziz bin Abderrahmane Al Saoud, who died in 1953 at the age of 72 years, to gain access to the throne. Already aged and suffering from Alzheimer's disease at the time of his accession to power, foreign observers expect a transitional reign. He conferred on his half brother Moukrine ben Abdelaziz Al Saud, younger of the sons of Abdelaziz Al Saud, the title of crown prince. The latter, however, does not succeed him to the Ministry of Defense, which is attributed to the son of Salman, Mohammed bin Salmane Al Saoud.
Salman's inauguration marks the renewed influence of the Soudayri clan, including the new king and his deceased brothers, Fahd (1921-2005), king from 1982 to his death, Sultan (1928-2011), prince heir of 2005 to his death and Nayef (1933-2012), heir prince of 2011 to his death. It is his son, Mohammed ben Nayef Al Saud, who is named second heir by the new king. This designation marks the passage of power to the grandsons of Abdelaziz Al Saud.
First steps
The new king dismissed his predecessor, dismissing two of his sons, Prince Michaal (governor of the Mecca region) and Prince Turki (governor of Riyadh), as well as Khaled al-Twaijri (former chamberlain) ), Bandar Ben Sultan (Secretary General of the National Security Council) and Prince Khaled Ben Bandar (Chief of Intelligence). These decisions are commented as a revenge, while King Abdullah had, in 2014, tried to dismiss relatives of Salmane. Important new appointments were also made, notably at the head of the Ministries of Social Affairs, Culture and Information, at the head of the Bourse and the religious police. A salary equivalent to two months' salary is also paid to government employees (and to a lesser extent, students and retirees) to ensure social peace17.
In April 2015, he carried out a new reshuffle by appointing his nephew Mohammed ben Nayef Al Saoud crown prince, in fact the former crown prince Moukrine bin Abdelaziz Al Saoud, a fact unprecedented in the history of the Saudi monarchy. His son, Mohammed ben Salmane Al Saoud is named second heir. On that date, the king and his two potential successors belonged to the Soudeyri clan. Foreign Minister Saoud al-Faisal Al Saud, who has been in office since 1975, is replaced by Adel al-Joubeir, then ambassador of the kingdom in the United States. These decisions are analyzed as a will of the king to rejuvenate the country's governing team18.
He is cited in the Panama Papers case in April 201619.
Foreign politic
The war waged by Saudi troops in Yemen, between aerial bombardments and blockade of supply routes, leads to a cholera epidemic and a famine that could reach "biblical proportions" 20. According to the World Health Organization, in May 2017, more than 500 people died of cholera and 65,000 others were infected by the epidemic21. The famine would have left more than 10,000 dead behind it and could ultimately affect up to 19 of the country's 27 million people, according to UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Egeland. NGOs accuse Saudi Arabia of striking their institutions.
In June 2017, Saudi Arabia broke diplomatic relations and trade agreements with Qatar, which it accuses of "supporting terrorism", including al-Qaeda, the Islamic state and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Other

It owns the castle of Horizon (France). In the summer of 2014, his arrival in France gave rise to a controversy: his services sank a concrete slab on the beach of Mirandole to install an elevator. A grid is also laid in order to prohibit access to the beach, before the town hall intervenes and stops the works. A renovation of the castle is carried out. The mayor of Vallauris and an elected environmentalist oppose the restrictions requested by the king. The controversy took on a national scale in France, when it was revealed that a woman CRS would have been removed from the security system at the request of the Saudis, which the prefect denies. A policeman on duty is overthrown by a car of the Saudi delegation25.
