Aqaba or Akaba al-'Aqabah is a coastal city of 88,780 inhabitants1 at the southern end of Jordan.
Aqaba occupies a strategic position for Jordan as it is the only port in the country. The city is adjacent to Eilat, Israel, and a border crossing is used to get there. Aqaba and Eilat are at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Economy
Nowadays, the city is a seaside resort and a diving center. However, there are still many industrial activities in the area, such as oil and sugar refineries. It exports phosphate and shells. Aqaba is also an important administrative center in southern Jordan. Aqaba has an airport (IATA code: AQJ).
In 2011, a decision was made to create a theme park on Star Trek - the first in the world - on the Aqaba region. Planned to open in 2014, this park is expected to cost $ 1.5 billion - an impressive figure but below the cost of a Universal or Disney type park. This project is close to the heart of the King, who is a confirmed Trekkie since he made an appearance in an episode of the series Star Trek: Voyager in 1995.

History
Aqaba is the site of a settlement inhabited since 4000 BC. Especially because of its strategic position at the crossroads of trade routes between Asia, Africa and Europe. The original settlement is known as Elath and probably in Edomite). It was an Edomite center, then a Nabatean Arab.
The Bible mentions the place: "King Solomon also built boats at Ezion-Geber, near Elath in Edomite country, on the shores of the Red Sea." 2 This verse probably refers to an iron age port built on the current Aqaba position.
Under the dynasty of the Ptolemies, the Greeks called the city of Berenice, then the Romans Aila and Aelena. During the Roman occupation, Via Nova Traiana, which ran from Damascus to Amman, ended at Aqaba, where it rejoined the road from Palestine to Egypt.
Shortly after Muhammad's death, Aqaba became part of the caliphate, and passed successively into the hands of the Umayyads, Abbasids, Fatimids and Mamelukes. The beginning of the Muslim era saw the construction of the town of Ayla, described by the geographer Shams Eddin Muqaddasi as being right next to the original settlement, then in ruins. The ruins of Ayla (revealed in the 1980s by an American-Jordanian archaeological team) are located a short distance from the seafront.
In the twelfth century, the Crusaders occupied the city and built the fortress of Helim, which remains relatively well preserved today. In addition to building a fort in Aqaba, the Crusaders fortify the small island called Graye Island (now known as Pharaoh Island, 7 kilometers from the coast). The island is now in Egyptian territory. As early as 1170, Aqaba and the Isle of Graye were reconquered by Saladin. The Mamelukes took the city in 1250 and rebuilt the fort in the 14th century during the reign of one of the last Mamluk sultans, Qansah al-Ghuri.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the Mamluk dynasty and the region were under Ottoman influence. Under the Ottomans, the importance of the city declines: Aqaba becomes a simple fishing village.

During the First World War, Ottoman forces were forced to withdraw from the city in 1917 after a raid led by Lawrence of Arabia and Arab forces of Hussein bin Ali. The region is annexed by the kingdom of Hijaz. The capture of Aqaba allows the supply from Egypt, the Arab and British forces fighting further north, Transjordan and Palestine. Aqaba was incorporated into the British Transjordan Protectorate in 1925.
