The profession of doctor

The role of the physician is to identify, prevent and treat individuals' health problems.

Its tasks are varied: medical consultation, prescription of medicines or treatments, radiotherapy, practice of deliveries, establishment of a diagnosis, treatment of diseases, etc.

He is often called upon to give advice to prevent disease and to be in good health. Some will also do some teaching or research.

What happens during a consultation with

doctor?

• It determines the reason for the patient to consult it;

• Performs physical examinations and laboratory tests (eg blood tests);

• Diagnoses the patient's physical or psychological problem;

• Establishes a treatment plan that includes rehabilitation of the patient, prevention of relapses and illnesses and maintenance of health;

• Explains the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment to the patient and, where applicable, to his or her family;

• Referring or collaborating with specialists as required. For example, if he thinks a person has MS, he will usually refer him to a neurologist.

Doctors' hours of work are usually rather long and irregular because they have to respond to emergencies. They can easily find a job to practice their profession, either in the cities or in the regions.

The qualities required to practice this profession are to have a strong interest in science and to be able to listen well and communicate well with individuals.

To be admitted to a faculty of medicine (at the university), one must have a minimum college diploma in health sciences or pure sciences. He then went on to study for four years in one of the universities. A preparatory year may be required if the candidate does not perform sufficiently well.

When he graduates as a medical doctor, he must practice for two years under the supervision of others

doctors. The final step is the successful completion of the College of Physicians
