Mother's Day is an annual celebration in honor of mothers in many
countries.
On this occasion, children offer gifts to their mothers, cakes,
flowers1 or objects they have made at school or at home. This festival is also
celebrated by adults of all ages to honor their mother.
The date of Mother's Day varies from country to country, but the
majority of them chose to celebrate it in May.
In Belgium, Canada, Switzerland and many other countries, Mother's
Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. In France, Monaco and several
Francophone African countries, it is celebrated on the last Sunday in May,
unless it coincides with Pentecost, in which case the celebration is postponed
to the first Sunday in June. In Luxembourg, mothers are celebrated on the
second Sunday in June

The first traces of celebration in honor of the mothers are present
in ancient Greece during the spring ceremonies in honor of Rhea (or Cybele),
the great mother of the gods and especially mother of Zeus. This cult is
celebrated in the Ides of March throughout Asia Minor. Roman religious
festivals celebrate the matrons on March 1 during Matronalia
("matronales"), and Cybèle during the Hilaria. All these celebrations
take place in spring, the month of fertility.
It is possible that the early Christians revered the Virgin Mary by
assimilating the cults of these pagan goddesses, but it was more difficult for
them to associate these feasts with celebrations dedicated to mothers because
of the theological questions concerning her virginity.
In the fifteenth century, the English celebrate Mothering Sunday,
first at the beginning of Lent and then on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In 1908,
the United States developed Modern Mother's Day as it is celebrated today by
setting up Mother's Day in memory of the mother of Anna Jarvis. The United
Kingdom in turn adopted this feast in 1914, and then Germany officialised it in
1923. Other countries followed such as Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey
or Australia.
