Turkey, in long form the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental country located in the confines of Asia and Europe. It has borders with Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan (Nakhichevan), Iran, Iraq (Regional Government of Kurdistan) and Syria. It is a republic with a presidential regime whose official language is Turkish. Its capital is Ankara officially since October 13, 1923. Turkey is bordered to the north by the Black Sea, to the west by the Aegean Sea and to the south by the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea: the Levantine Basin. Eastern Thrace (Europe) and Anatolia (Asia) are separated by the Sea of Marmara and the Straits of the Bosphorus to the east and the Dardanelles to the west (these two inlets form the so-called Straits ).

Turkey has a part of its territory in Europe by Eastern Thrace (equivalent to 3% of its territorial area but which represents 14% of its population, ie more than 10 million people2). By its geographical location, straddling two continents, at the crossroads of the Russia-Mediterranean and Balkan-Middle East routes, on the ancient silk road, today on the route of strategically important pipelines, this region Has always been a crossroads for economic, cultural and religious exchanges. It has made the link between the East and the West, hence its prominent geostrategic position, which is strengthened by the political events that rock the Middle East and the hydrocarbon market or the tensions linked to the problem of the water.

Modern Turkey, founded at the instigation of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923 on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, tainted by the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek pontic genocides, defeated after the First World War, is a secular parliamentary republic, Unitary and constitutional. Since then, it has consistently moved closer to the West by joining, for example, cooperation organizations: NATO, OECD, OSCE, Council of Europe or G20. Since 1963, Turkey has officially applied for membership of the European Economic Community (EEC), the current European Union (EU), with which it entered into a customs union agreement in 1995, which has been in force since 1996. Negotiations For Turkey's entry into the EU have been officially under way since 2005. At the same time, Turkey has maintained a privileged relationship with countries with a predominantly Muslim population, as well as with the Middle East and Asia By participating in the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Organization for Economic Co-operation, and the Turkish Council.
