Snapchat is a free photo sharing app and video available mobile
overhangs iOS and Android. It is designed and developed by students from
Stanford University in California. The age required to download and use this
application is 13 years1.
The peculiarity of this application is the existence of a limit of
time of visualization of the medium sent to its recipients. Each photograph or
video sent can only be seen by its recipient for a period of time ranging from
one to ten seconds. The company is valued at $ 24 billion in 20172.
In 2016, the company changed its name to "Snap" 3.
Operation
This application allows sending messages with images or videos that
self-destruct after 1 to 10 seconds (the duration is chosen by the sender),
especially selfies23. 350 million snaps are exchanged every day in the world24.
The application also allows users to create a Story ("story"). It is
a juxtaposition of several photos / videos. A "story" can be seen as
many times as the user wants, but each story element has a lifetime of 24
hours.
Since May 1, 2014, a chat has been inserted in the application as
well as a presence detector, to chat live via camera interpos25.
Among other things, Snapchat can draw on images or apply color
filters (four filters) to create different black and white values. Personal
data such as time of day or temperature can also be added. The January 2015
update provides filters based on geographic location. In September 2015,
snapchat introduced the "Lenses" allowing users to add augmented
reality masks to their photos and videos26.
There are other applications that allow you to send photos to the
selected Snapchat contacts, but also to save the images received without the
Snapchat sender being notified, which is contrary to the principle of Snapchat.
features
Discover
January 27, 2015, Snapchat launches a new space within its
application: "Discover" 28. It is designed as a platform hosting
clean channels for a limited number of newspaper publishers. The top 11
partners selected by Snapchat - such as MTV, CNN, National Geographic - feed
channels with exclusive content. These contents have the particularity of
respecting the Snapchat codes especially the tone (playful, infotainment) but
also the grammar (vertical videos, importance of the images, animation). They
are also ephemeral and available only 24 hours before being replaced.
Evolution
The functionality has evolved greatly after its launch. In May
2015, Snapchat wishes to enrich the space with a sharing feature. Thus, users
who consume the contents of a publisher can share it with another member by
maintaining a click on the publication. It is therefore shareable in private
messaging (but not in the form of "Story"). In December 2015,
Snapchat also allows publishers to share their content outside the platform to
Twitter and Facebook through links that return users to the Snapchat
application.
In July 2015, Snapchat during an update of the application reviews
the place and visibility of its Discover space. Thus, Discover is no longer
only available in third screen, but also becomes visible from the
"Stories" screen. According to a Digiday study, this increase in
visibility would have enabled the platform's publishers to gain up to 70% This
update followed an observed decrease of the audience30 for the publishers
(between 30 and 50% less audience compared to the launch of the functionality).
Snapchat has therefore sought to enhance its content offering and urge members
to use Discover.
In October 2015, Snapchat, who was himself a publisher at Discover
with "Snap Channel", announces that he is withdrawing from the
platform. The network that employs 15 people for this service, therefore,
chooses to refocus on the network and leaves the publishers the only actors in
the content.
Partner Publishers
At the launch of the Discover service, 11 publishers were partners
and animated a channel on the application. During the first year, Snapchat
gradually added new players. In December 2015 there were 18 publishers:
DailyMail, CNN, BuzzFeed, Sweet, IGN, Refinery29, Vox, Vice, Cosmopolitan,
Tastemade, Food Network, People, ESPN, iHeartRadio, Mashable, Brit + Co,
National Geographic and Comedy Central. The Wall Street Journal should also
soon integrate Discover32.
Income sharing
With Discover, Snapchat has several objectives. The first is to
offer an enriched experience to members with new features. This is also a way
to keep members longer on the application and increase the connection
recurrence.
At the same time, with leading publishers, Snapchat finds a new spring
to monetize its audiences33. Thus, the revenues generated by the advertisements
published in the channels of the 18 partner publishers are shared. If a
publisher is an advisor, he would pay up to 30% of the revenues to Snapchat. In
the event that Snapchat is a business partner, the network would retain 50% of
revenues34.
Memories
In July 2016, Snapchat introduced an optional feature called
"Memories". It allows you to save snaps and story posts in a private
storage space where other images stored in the phone can be viewed. The saved
content can be searched by date or by using a local object recognition system.
Snaps added to Memories can also be placed in the "My Eyes Only"
space that is locked by a PIN35 code.
