water cycle steps

The water cycle (or hydrological cycle) is a model representing the path between the large reservoirs of water, solid or water vapor on Earth: oceans, atmosphere, lakes, Water, groundwater and glaciers. The "engine" of this cycle is solar energy which, by promoting the evaporation of water, entails all other exchanges.
The science that studies the water cycle is hydrology. It can be decomposed into hydrogeology, surface hydrology, urban hydraulics, etc.
The different reservoirs

• Liquid salt water from the oceans: the largest reservoir;
• liquid fresh water: rivers, lakes, freshwater ponds, marshes;
• Glaciers: the flow can be stored for a time in the form of snow or ice. Their melt is more or less important according to the variations of the climate;
• atmospheric water (water vapor).
Limitations of the model

The water cycle at geological scales is more complex than the above model. During its long existence, 4 billion years, the Earth has lost a quarter of its water. If water molecules, H2O, are too heavy to escape directly into space (see escapement), they can decompose under various chemical and biochemical actions into oxygen and hydrogen molecules (see Methanogens, photosynthesis ). Hydrogen, much lighter, easily escapes into space. The chemical composition of the atmosphere plays an important role in the history of terrestrial water.
