Zayed bin Sultan El Hor Al Nahyane (born in زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان) is a Cheikhet politician, founder of the federation of the Arab Emirates. He was born on 6 May 1918 and died on 2 November 2004. Which he directed from its creation on 2 December 1971 until its death in 2004.
Biography
His birth year is not known precisely (according to sources, he would be born in 1908, 1916, 1918 or 1923 in Al Ain). This vagueness is the testimony of a time when the Emirates were still only a piece of desert and had no administration concerned with keeping a register of civil status.
He succeeded his brother Chakhbout ben Sultan Al Nahyane on August 6, 1966 during a coup without bloodshed. On this occasion he became emir of Abu Dhabi, and subsequently from 2 December 1971, undisputed leader of the United Arab Emirates.
In a few years he created a real regional power, sprinkling pipelines sands, refineries, dams and seawater desalination plants. He redistributed the benefits of black gold to the people, planted roads, built Hundreds of schools and dozens of hospitals as well as skyscrapers and palaces of glass and steel.
Outside its borders, its moderate policy ensured the respect of the international community.
At the end of his life, Zayed is ill for several years and no longer attends the Arab League summits. He received a kidney transplant in August 2000. He died on November 2, 2004, more than 80 years later, after thirty years as head of the United Arab Emirates.
His eldest son, Khalifa ben Zayed Al Nahyane, became president of the UAE when he died. His other son, Abdallah Ben Zayed, is the country's current foreign minister.
