The New Hampshire Hotel (John Irving)
Unquestionably, this is my favorite novel. The ordinary
history of a family of extraordinary characters, births, deaths, life in
several successive hotels (including one in Vienna, Austria), bears, humor
mixed with the unusual, a pet dog, Sad but unnecessary moments, and Irving's
typical writing that mixes fluidity, simplicity and precision. It is a thick
book, but it is easy to traverse. I must have read it four or five times, and I
shall plunge into it someday, soon, surely. If you like John Irving, I advise
you as much "The work of god, the part of the devil" and "The
world according to Garp". If I can afford it, I advise against its most
recent novels, which tend to get lost in length and detail - I have not managed
to finish the last three ... But others have loved them, so Do what you please!
My Stupid Dog (John Fante)
Do you have curiosity about human misery, social problems,
dark family stories and greyish worlds? So welcome to John Fante, master of the
black novel. I read this book, advised and loaned by a former colleague of
work, and I appreciated it so much that I have browsed many other books of the
author. You will discover a husband and a father of a family in conflict and
also, of course, his relationship with a dog whose first name - Stupid, for
those who do not follow - hides so well the affection he carries to him. If you
liked "My Stupid Dog", I would advise you to also read "Request
to Dust".
