Disability is the limitation of an individual's ability to interact with his / her environment, leading to psychological, intellectual, social and / or physical difficulties. Disability is first thought to be related to a disability that causes disability - permanent or not - and is then redefined in terms of unequal means, incorporating the idea that "interventions to remove environmental and social barriers are necessary1 ".

The term "handicap" thus acquired a social dimension in addition to the medical one, and it refers to the difficulties of the person called "in a situation of handicap" 2 in the face of a given environment in terms of accessibility, expression, comprehension or apprehension. The level of disability, that is to say the extent of the limitations of activity and participation, varies according to the contexts (societal, human, technical, legal, etc.).

Disability affects 80 million people in Europe3 and 650 million worldwide4 or even a billion people according to the World Disability Report of  WHO and the World Bank5. The prevalence of disability is estimated at 15% of the world's population5, and in 80% of cases it would be invisible disabilities6.

Medical typologies of disability

These three typologies of disability are not adopted by international organizations but are distinguished according to their medical causes:

• Physical disability encompasses all disorders that may cause partial or total motor impairment26;

• sensory disability encompasses the difficulties associated with sensory organs, including visual impairment27 and hearing impairment28;

• mental or intellectual disability is a difficulty to understand and a limitation in the speed of mental functions in terms of understanding, knowledge and cognition.

Some jurisdictions, such as France, make the distinction between mental handicap, psychic handicap30, and cognitive impairment31. WHO, for its part, uses the term "intellectual disability" for mental disability32.

In addition, we must add the specificity of people with multiple disabilities, that is to say those who combine several disabilities.

Classification by date of occurrence

Depending on the date on which the disability occurred33:

• pre-natal disability (chromosomal or genetic), early infectious embryofetopathy (20-35%);

• disability of the perinatal child between 22 weeks of amenorrhea and 8 days post-natal (30-60%);

• post-natal disability (infectious, tumorous or traumatic) (5-10%)
