Instagram is an application, a social network and a service of sharing photos and videos available on mobile platforms of type iOS, Android and Windows Phone. The minimum age is 12 years. It was co-founded by the American Kevin Systrom2 and the Brazilian Michel Mike Krieger in October 2010. Instagram boasts over 600 million users worldwide3, of which 75% are users outside the United States, according to Official figures provided in July 2016. The company addresses its users by the denomination Igers4.
Instagram allows to share its photographs and videos with its network of friends, to provide a positive appreciation (function "I like") and to leave comments on the pictures deposited by the other users. It also allows to dialogue with the members via the use of the internal mailbox called "Direct Instagram" 5. Applications such as Instagram contribute to the practice of phonemography, or photography with a mobile phone.
The service quickly grew in popularity, designated Apple as "Application of the Year" in 2011, 6 it already had 100 million active users in April 2012. Two years later, in March 2014, the network announced 200 million And then in November of the same year, 300 million7 being the second social network in the world after Facebook and before Twitter8. In September 2015, Instagram on its official blog announces 400 million active monthly users. In detail, the 100 million new users come from 50% of Europe and Asia. Three countries participated particularly in this growth according to Instagram: Japan, Brazil and Indonesia. 75% of the audience today is outside the United States.
The peculiarities of the network
With 400 million active monthly members, Instagram is emerging as a leading social media. It displays notable peculiarities compared to other major networks like Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.
No sharing features
Contrary to what is found on Facebook or Twitter for example, Instagram does not include any sharing feature. On Twitter, a user can "retweeter" a content, that is, they can share a user's publication with their subscriber communities. The same principle exists on Facebook (button "share") or on Pinterest for example (button "re-pin"). On Instagram, users can not natively share content from other users. This is why viral content is very limited on the network.
However, users can share content from other members by reusing third-party applications that support the operation. Sharing content on Instagram is called a "repost" or "regram" from which the verb "regram"
Very "committed" members on the network
Instagram is often presented as the network of commitment compared to existing ones. Indeed, the network makes it possible to liker very easily the publications of the members by clicking on a heart icon or by double-tapping on the image in question.
This ease of interaction and the immediacy of the report to the image allows users to commit themselves to a large proportion of the contents published on the network. Several studies published on the accounts of major brands on the network have shown that commitment levels averaged over 5% (for 100 subscribers, 5 like or comment on content), 80 times more than on Facebook and 160 Times more than on Twitter.
An unmoderate range
Unlike Facebook, a user of Instagram will be able to see in its news feed all the publications posted by the accounts to which it is subscribed. There is no algorithm that limits the scope of certain accounts. This will no longer be the case in a few weeks [when?], Because in March 2016, Instagram announced the use of an algorithm shortly.
Lack of external links
Instagram does not allow members to post active (clickable) links on its contents. If a member adds a URL link in a comment or photo / video description, this link will appear but will not be clickable. The network is therefore more focused on its own universe unlike Twitter and Facebook that allow to insert active links to other websites. Instagram currently authorizes only one clickable link in the "biography" of the user's account.
The new advertising formats introduced by Instagram allow advertisers today to offer links to their sites and web platforms.
Easier publication of photos
The Instagram website is to be distinguished from its mobile application. Although the site is usable on all types of support (desktop, tablet, smartphone), the application is based on a principle of mobile first. Sending photos and videos is only possible from mobile platforms. Applications such as Layout allow you to format images so that you can then share them via Instagram and / or Facebook.
