Switzerland, in long
form the Swiss Confederation5 in German Schweiz and Schweizerische
Eidgenossenschaft, in Italian Svizzera andConfederazione Svizzera, in Romansh
Svizraet Confederaziun svizra, is a central European country and, according to
certain definitions, western, consisting of 26 cantons6 , With Bern as its
capital, sometimes called the "federal city". It is bordered by Italy
in the south, France in the west, Germany in the north, and Austria and
Liechtenstein in the east. Switzerland is a country with no ocean coast, but
has direct access to the sea by the Rhine (Mannheim Convention). The area of
the country is 41 285 km2. It is geographically divided between the Alps, the
Swiss Plateau and the Jura. The Alps occupy most of the territory (60%). The
population of Switzerland exceeds 8 million inhabitants and is concentrated
mainly on the plateau, where the largest cities are located. Among them, Zurich
and Geneva are two important economic centers and global cities.
The establishment of the
Swiss Confederation is traditionally dated on 1 August 1291, which is
celebrated every year as a National Day. The country has a long tradition of
political and military independence and joined the United Nations only in 2002.
However, it pursues an active foreign policy and is frequently involved in
processes of building peace around the world9. Switzerland is also the cradle
of the International Committee of the Red Cross; It also houses numerous
international organizations, including the second largest United Nations
headquarters after the one in New York: the United Nations Office at Geneva. In
the European field, it is one of the founding members of the European Free
Trade Association and a member of the Schengen area, but not of the European
Union of the European Economic Area. Switzerland has four cultural and
linguistic regions6, and therefore has four national languages: German, French,
Italian and Romansh. While the first three languages are official, Romansh is
only partially official. As a result, the Swiss form a national civic sense of
the term, having no strong unity on an ethnic or linguistic level; The strong
sense of Swiss identity and community is based on a common historical
background sharing common values, such as federalism, direct democracy, Ernest
Renan cites it as an example in What is a Nation?
Switzerland has the
fourth highest nominal GDP in the world per capita and the eighth GDP in
purchasing power parity according to the Swiss Credit and the IMF. The Swiss
have the second highest life expectancy in the world on the list published by
the UN DESA. Switzerland is classified as one of the ten least corrupt countries;
Moreover, over the last five years the country has been ranked first in terms
of economic and tourism competitiveness according to the Global Competitiveness
Report and the Competitiveness Report of the Travel and Tourism Sector, both
produced by the Forum Economic development. Zurich and Geneva were both ranked
among the most pleasant cities in the world for their quality of life according
to a ranking made by Mercer
