Timothy Carrick grew up in the UK and studied Arabic at Oxford University, learning how to
read and speak the language fluently. At the age of twenty-one, he began travelling in the
Arab world, and he has spent the last fifteen years based in Sana’a, the capital city of
Yemen, working as a researcher and writer.
He first became interested in Ibn Battuta when he found a copy of the great explorer’s
‘Travels’ — in Arabic, of course — in a second-hand bookshop in Sana’a. After reading it,
he made a decision: he would follow in the explorer’s footsteps! He would start in Ibn
Battuta’s birthplace, Tangiers in Morocco, and then, following the same route, he would
visit all the places that the explorer had visited nearly seven hundred years before. Then,
at the end, he would write a book about his experiences and about what he had found.
So it was that on 13 September 2004, he landed at Tangiers International Airport. In the
city, he was able to see Ibn Battuta’s tomb, the first of many tombs that he visited on his
travels. He also talked to a Moroccan historian, who gave him some valuable advice as well
as a copy of his biography of the explorer. From Tangiers he flew to Cairo — unlike Ibn
Battuta, who had ridden across North Africa on a camel! Of course, Timothy Carrick only
had four years to complete his journey, whereas Ibn Battuta travelled for twenty-six years!
Later, in Oman, he went to Qalhat and Sur. From there he hoped to sail to Dhofar, but
unfortunately it was impossible to find a suitable boat, so he had to go by bus instead. He
spent three weeks in Dhofar, visiting mosques, tombs and archaeological sites and talking
to the local people, who were amazed that he could speak such good Arabic.
As he continued on his journey through India, China and other places, he discovered that
writing just one book would not be enough. By the end of 2008, when he finally returned
to Yemen, he had completed three books, two of which have already been published.
