CERTIFICATE for GENERAL EDUCATION
SEMESTER TWO — FIRST SESSION
TIME: 3 hours TOTAL MARKS: 70
This paper has 2 pages
READING 1 (Items 1 – 4)
Read each text. Then, for the numbered statement, write ‘True’ or ‘False’.
The hotel has excellent facilities and its staff are friendly and efficient. Its prices are also
very reasonable. Unfortunately, the hotel's location, fifteen kilometres outside the town,
makes it unsuitable for the kind of activities which we are planning.
1. The writer recommends that his company should use the hotel. _________
I was alone in the house. Outside there was a terrible storm. Suddenly the phone rang. I
quickly picked up the receiver. “Is that you, Dad?”, I said. But nobody answered. I sat
down and watched TV, but I couldn’t concentrate. Then I saw a dark shape at the window.
2. The writer is very nervous. _________
I began life as Patsy McClenny, but when, at the age of 17, I had a chance to become an
actress, a friend of mine told me this name sounded ‘ugly’. At first, I was angry with her,
but then I had to admit that she was right. So now all my fans know me as ‘Stella Fairchild’.
3. The writer has changed her name. _________
Tell your parents where you’re going, who with, and when you’ll be back. Make sure you
know how to get home and give your parents a phone number so they can contact you. If
you get lost, be careful who you ask for directions — don’t just talk to anybody!
4. The writer is giving advice to young people. _________
READING 2 (Items 5 – 10)
Read this letter from Luke to his Russian pen-friend. Then complete the task on page 2.
Hi Alexei! Thanks for your last letter telling me about your family. They sound very
normal — you’re lucky! Mine are all a bit mad! Take my dad, for example. He works in a
bank, but his big hobby is food. As soon as he gets home, he rushes into the kitchen,
and starts cooking some wonderful new dish. But they all taste the same to me! Then
there's my mum. She's a fitness fanatic, and we don't see much of her in the evenings
because she's usually at her sports club. Not at the moment, though, because she broke
her leg playing tennis and has to walk with a stick for a few weeks!
As for my little sister Josie, she’s so boring! She loves school, studying and even homework!
She hates sweets, TV and parties! Can you believe it? But the worst thing is,
whenever she goes out, she takes an umbrella with her, even if the sun's shining! She
looks so silly! Granny lives with us, too. She says she's decided to enjoy herself now
that she’s eighty. So she’s given up sewing and started doing parachuting instead! She
goes every weekend, but she hasn't broken anything yet… Finally, my Auntie Joan,
she’s the maddest of all of them! She lives just round the corner, and everything in her
house is pink — walls, carpets, curtains, everything! She’s even made a pink jacket for
her dog! So you see how terrible my life is, Alexei, compared with yours. But what can
I do? Write soon. Best wishes, Luke
