Read the following two texts by the same writer. Then answer the questions.
Text 1 For each question, write a short answer (not more than THREE WORDS).
As you probably know, Vienna is the capital city of Austria, a German-speaking
country in Central Europe. It’s a famous old city, so when I was offered the chance
to take a six-month course at Vienna University, I immediately accepted.
I arrived there in early October 1993, and at first I really enjoyed it. But then, in
November, the winter came, with horrible freezing winds straight from Siberia! I’ve
never been so cold in all my life! The problem was that, as a student, I was always
very short of money, so I couldn’t afford to stay in a nice warm flat or to buy good
clothes to protect myself from the cold. Anyway, being in Vienna was not a pleasant
experience for me, so after finishing my course, I was very happy to leave.
7. What was the writer doing in Vienna? _____________
8. What did he dislike about the city? _____________
9. How long did he stay there? _____________
Text 2 For each question, write a short answer (not more than THREE WORDS).
After leaving Vienna in 1994, I always said to myself, “I’m never going back there
again!” But, in fact, I did! It was ten years later, and I was already working for a
travel company. A group of American tourists needed a guide; they wanted to visit
some of the capitals of Europe, including Vienna. Three guides were available, but the
boss knew that I could speak German, so he chose me!
To be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to it at all. But funnily enough, it was one of the
best trips I’ve ever had. The food, the museums, the concerts — everything in Vienna
was fantastic! Of course, this time, it was summer, the weather was perfect and I had
enough money to enjoy myself!
10. When did the writer go to Vienna again? ______________ (year)
11. Why was he chosen for this trip? Because he ________________
12. Who travelled with him? Some _________________

Reading 3 (Items 13 -20)
Read this magazine article, and then complete Task 1 and Task 2.
For centuries, the region now known as Bangladesh has been famous for producing
materials such as cotton, wool and silk. These products do not come from large factories;
they are made by weavers working in small workshops in the villages, using traditional
methods and simple equipment. One million people in the country — weavers and their
families — make their living from this industry.
For these people, the floods which hit the country in July 1998 were a disaster. A huge
area of land was covered by water, and millions of people became homeless. When they
were able to return to their homes, the weavers found that all their tools and machines
had been damaged or destroyed by the floods. What could they do now?
Fortunately, most of the weavers were able to survive, thanks to help from the Grameen
Bank. First, the bank lent them the money that they needed — about two hundred dollars
— to replace the damaged equipment. Then a project was set up, known as ‘Fashion for
Development’. In this project, 35,000 weavers have been helped to find export markets
for their products. Traditional materials and clothes from Bangladesh are very popular
abroad and can be sold at high prices, because of their excellent quality and the beauty of
their brightly-coloured designs. In fact, fashion shows, such as ‘Stars of Bangladesh’ in
London in April 2001, have been a great success in Western countries.
However, ‘Fashion for Development’ would not have been possible without the work of
one very special person, a fashion designer called Bibi Russell. Born into a rich family in
Bangladesh, she became the first woman from that country to study at the London
College of Fashion. After graduating in 1975, she had a successful career in Europe until
returning home in 1990. Five years later, she set up her own company, Bibi Productions,
working closely with local weavers in the villages and with the 'Fashion for Development'
project. She is a modern woman, but is also very proud of her country’s traditions.
Task 1 For each statement, write ‘True’, ‘False’ or ‘DNS’ (= ‘Doesn’t Say’).
13. Weaving is a new industry in Bangladesh. _________
14. The population of Bangladesh is 140 million. _________
15. Bibi Russell comes from a poor family. _________
16. She set up Bibi Productions in 1995. _________
Task 2 Choose the correct option: A, B or C.
17. The weavers lost their equipment because of _____________.
